Who should I select as an in-house trainer for our company?

Trainers should have the knowledge, training and experience to train operators and evaluate their experience. It is wise to select an employee who has a good safety record, is comfortable with presenting to a group and has familiarity with the company’s warehouse and equipment.

Is our in-house trainer required to take a Train-the-Trainer course?

Per OSHA regulations, your trainer does not have to seek a third party for training; however, many companies find it beneficial. A Train-the-Trainer course provides your trainer with classroom resources, reviews how to conduct a hand-on evaluation and updates her on current material handling standards.

How long will my employees be away from the office/warehouse?

The class length is determined by the type of class your employees attend. Operator classes average 4 hours while trainer classes average 8 hours.

Are operators required to wear seatbelts?

Although regulations do not specifically state operators must wear seatbelts, failure to do so may be cited during an OSHA inspection. The general duty clause states an employer shall furnish a place of employment that is free of hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to its employees.

Am I required to conduct training if we purchase new equipment?

Training is dependent upon the type of new equipment your company purchased. If you brought in the same type of equipment, your operator’s original training would be current. If the new equipment is different (i.e. another category, another manufacturer), additional training is needed. It is in the best interests of the company and employee if a hands-on evaluation is provided, noting any differences between the warehouse equipment.
